Introduction to High Performance Computing using Argon (Zoom)

The date for this workshop has not yet been finalized and remains subject to change. Registration will open closer to the event date.

The workshop is a two-hour session that consists of two parts: an introduction to a High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment and hands-on training on the basic usage of the Argon cluster (access, configuration, job submission, and data transfer). It is geared towards users of HPC, including faculty, postdocs, and students, who are eager to learn about getting started with the Argon cluster and storage services for their computational research. No prior experience or knowledge of supercomputers is required to attend the workshop and participate in the in-class activities. We will not deal with complicated HPC techniques but rather focus on fundamental skills that will enable attendees to start using Argon effectively.

It will be led by Doosoo Yoon from Research Services and will include both lecture and hands-on training.

The topics to be covered include:

  • Introduction to HPC facilities

  • A brief overview of Research storage and ITS-supported services

  • Getting started using the Argon cluster

    • Accessing and checking the HPC environment

    • Launching HPC jobs with a Queue-Batch system

    • Data Transfer

If you cannot attend and need to cancel, please contact the instructor, Doosoo Yoon (doosoo-yoon@uiowa.edu).  The meeting will be held online via Zoom, and the details of the Zoom call will be sent immediately after registration.

Please note: For in-class activities, you will need an Argon cluster account. If you do not have an account yet, please visit the ITS HPC site and apply for it.
